Candle flame practise

In a previous post I discussed how I wanted to include a variety of shots in my final product that were more abstract and that added significance to the tone of my overall piece. One of the potential ideas that I wish to include is a flickering flame and smoke, I felt as this would fit well in my final product as flames are able to signify romance and feelings of love which is a part of the narrative for my music video.

Initially my group and I were unsure of how we wanted the flame look on camera and we were also aware that our choice of lighting had to be appropriate seeing as we wanted the flames to appear bright and vivid but we also needed enough light in order for the smoke to show once the flame had been blown out.

When filming my group and I struggled with an appropriate location considering that outside was windy and bright and inside filming was not allowed seeing that we were on school site. We decided to line a box with black paper in order to shield the flame from the wind as well as limit the amount of natural day light. I was pleased with the overall outcome as it gave us a feel for the potential challenges we face when filming fire.

When editing we decided to dim the background during the edit in order to make the flame more vibrant. We also decided to reverse the smoke and flame as this made the shot more interesting to watch.

After completing this small practice task my group and I agreed that we liked the idea of striking a match however we felt that a long and tall candle would look better than the one we originally used in the clip above.
